IRF Director General, Susanna Zammataro, at SWARCO Innovation Talk
As part of the Swarco Innovation Hub’s initiative, a “Swarco Innovation Talk” took place on 1st July 2021 with the objective to gather experts from different fields for an opinion exchange on the topic. IRF Director General Susanna Zammataro participated in the talk themed “How do we get around in 2035?” alongside other eminent speakers such as Fabio Nussio (Rome Mobility Agency), Prof. Mailer (Rome Mobility Agency), and Christoph Stögerer (SWARCO).
The expert talk dealt with cooperative, connected and automated mobility (CCAM), roads that are read by vehicles, micromobility and e-mobility, public transport and mobility in more liveable cities.
“We need to start doing things differently, we have not fully embraced the power of technology” said Ms Zammataro kicking off the conversation around the challenges to overcome to make mobility more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

When asked about the greatest potential to influence traffic and travelling for the better, Ms Zammataro highlighted the impact of digitalisation in increasing transport efficiency, making transport more attractive and user-friendly, as well as the importance of data sharing in this regard.
“Adopting and mainstreaming digitalisation and new technologies, such as advances in robotics and artificial intelligence, will be a game-changer for the industry”
IRF Director General, Ms Susanna Zammataro
Electromobility is often considered as a potential solution to making mobility more sustainable. To this regard, Ms Zammataro stressed that while electric mobility is an essential component of a broader transformation of the transport sector, e-mobility is more than just electric cars. “Simply replacing the current ICE cars with electric cars will not allow us to meet the climate targets nor address pressing problems like congestion, safety, affordability. Transforming mobility requires a balanced use of the Avoid-Shift-Improve strategies” she added.
On the subject of the implementation of self-driving cars, Ms Zammataro highlighted IRF’s Manifesto “Cooperative, Connected and Autonomous Mobility (CAMC)” done in collaboration with ASECAP, ERF, and other partners from the US, China, and Australia – and whose aim is to define the position of the IRF’s CCAM Committee on autonomous and connected mobility’s role, vision, and challenges.
The event concluded with a Q&A session.
