The UN ESCAP Regional Meeting on “Enhancing Energy Efficiency of the Freight Transport Sector in Asia and the Pacific,” held on 9 – 10 August 2023, in the captivating city of Kathmandu, Nepal, concluded with a series of vital conclusions and recommendations.
The meeting was attended by 70 participants, including esteemed country delegates from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, and several other nations. IRF Deputy Director General, Mr. Gonzalo Alcaraz joined the gathering to shed light on critical aspects of energy-efficient freight transport which were then reflected in the strategic recommendations formulated for the way forward.
During the Meeting, participants acknowledged the relevance of the discussion and stressed the paramount importance of enhancing energy efficiency in freight transport. The meeting culminated in the unveiling of a comprehensive regional roadmap toward sustainable and energy-efficient freight transport, offering a strategic guide for ESCAP member countries.

The adoption of the roadmap testifies the collective commitment to greener and more sustainable transportation practices, while recognising the essential role of quality infrastructure, addressing challenges faced by landlocked developing countries, embracing digitalisation and intelligent transport systems, fostering public-private collaboration, showcasing national energy efficiency initiatives, and outlining plans for future capacity building.
