Course Description
The International Road Federation (IRF) together with the Qatar Transportation and Traffic Safety Center of Qatar University and the Traffic Safety Analysis and Policy Special Interest Group of the World Conference on Transport Research Society (WCTRS) are pleased to invite you to this certified training course on Advanced Road Safety Audits.
This course is designed to provide a more advanced level of knowledge, skills and experience in Road Safety, to enable students to pursue a career in Road Safety Auditing. The course will provide more in-depth knowledge, and build on the foundations of the previous course titled “Introduction to Road Safety Audits”. The topics covered on this course will focus on the following areas:
- Legal and economic aspects of Road Safety
- Improving safety in the Road Design
- Safety measures for pedestrian and cyclist
- Safety in tunnels
- Consistency of the Road Designs
According to the 2018 World Health Organization (WHO) Global Status Report on Road Safety, every 24 seconds someone dies on the road, 54% of total deaths are pedestrian, cyclists and motorcyclists, and we will study why Low-Income countries which have 1% of the world´s vehicles but 13% of all deaths in comparison with High-Income countries with 40% of the world´s vehicles but 7% of all deaths.
In addition to the above topics covered on this course, attendees will be given the opportunity to participate in more challenging workshops, and address more complex problems in Road Safety Auditing.

Eur Ing Miguel-Angel Serrano Santos

Miguel-Angel Serrano Santos is a distinguished Chartered Civil Engineer and internationally recognised authority in road safety. A graduate of the University of Granada in Spain, he currently serves as Lead Trainer for the International Road Federation – IRF.
His career spans over two decades across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, with notable leadership roles. He has played a pivotal role in fostering cross-border partnerships among engineering professionals and has delivered Traffic Management and Road Safety courses to students and practitioners worldwide.
Dr. Eng. Wael Alhajyaseen
Associate Professor, Qatar Transportation and Traffic Safety Centre College of Engineering, Qatar University
Dr. Alhajyaseen is currently an associate research professor at Qatar Transportation and Traffic Safety Centrein the College of Engineering of Qatar University. He is specialised in traffic safety, road traffic control & operation, road user behaviour analysis and modeling, traffic simulator and VR applications, and Intelligent transportation systems.
Dr. Alhajyaseen has received the Research Excellence Award from the College of Engineering of Qatar University for the Academic Year 2018/2019.
Moreover, he received several regional and international awards for his contribution in the field of Traffic Engineering such as the International Yasoshima Yoshinosuke Prize provided by the Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies in 2009. Dr. Alhajyaseen is the Chair of the “Traffic Safety Analysis and Policy” Special Interest Group SIG C4 of the World Conference on Transport Research Society (WCTRS).
He is also Editor in the Case Studies on Transport Policy Journal (Elsevier), IATSS Research Journal (Elsevier), and the International Journal of Injury Control and Safety Promotion (Taylor&Francis).
Currently, Dr. Alhajyaseen is member of several national committees led by the General Directorate of Traffic in the Ministry of Interior and the National Traffic Safety Committee aiming to develop road safety curriculum for schools and colleges within the country. Dr. Alhajyaseen is the lead developer and the manager of the Traffic Safety Professional Training Program at Qatar Transportation and Traffic Safety Center, Qatar University.
Since 2016, more than 400 senior engineers and road safety practitioners from governmental institutions and engineering consultancy companies participated in the training program, not only from the State of Qatar but also from the region and the world.

The World Conference on Transport Research Society (WCTRS)
The World Conference on Transport Research Society (WCTRS) provides a forum for the interchange of ideas among transport researchers, managers, policy makers, and educators from all over the world, from a multi-modal, multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral perspective.
In addition to our Special Interest Groups, which facilitate research activities and the exchange of ideas in 42 topic areas, the WCTRS has a number of Task Forces which conduct research into emerging issues in Transport and aim to bridge gaps between research and policy-making.
- Road Safety Engineering: This track contains several courses tailored to highway and traffic engineers (in governmental and private sectors), planners, design consultants, and road contractors.
- Road Safety Audits: This track is tailored to those dealing with the development and evaluation of Road Safety Audits (in governmental and private sectors). The main objective of this track is to provide delegates with the needed knowledge and skills of conducting and evaluating road safety audits.
- Road Safety Management: This track is mainly designed for those responsible of developing road safety programmers and/or evaluating their effectiveness, as well as those involved in designing awareness campaigns and evaluating them (in governmental and private sectors). This training course aims to provide delegates with the knowledge of monitoring and evaluation of safety programs, the ability to plan and develop research designs that enable a robust quantification of the impact the road safety interventions, and the ability to identify, justify, develop, pilot and evaluate a road user safety campaign
