Innovative Technologies to Improve Road Safety

January 30 @ 9:15 am - 1:00 pm

Innovative technologies to improve road safety

International conference with professional training credits co-organized by PIARC Italia, Anas SpA and AISCAT

The international conference ” Innovative Technologies to Enhance Road Safety ” will be held on Friday, January 30, 2026, from 9:15 a.m. to approximately 1:00 p.m. The event is an important opportunity for international discussion dedicated to road safety, understood as a strategic priority for infrastructure, mobility, and sustainable development policies.

Co-organized by PIARC Italia, Anas SpA, and AISCAT, the workshop brings together representatives from institutions, international organizations, academia, and industry, with the aim of analyzing challenges, perspectives, and innovative solutions for reducing road accidents.

As with every PIARC Italia event, professional training credits will be awarded to the engineering associations of all Italian provinces, thanks to the collaboration with the Order of Engineers of the Province of Rome and its Foundation. Formal requests for patronage have also been submitted to the following organizations: MIT (Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport), ACI (Automobile Club of Italy), CNI (National Council of Engineers), ANCI (National Association of Italian Municipalities), and PIARC World Road Association.

Conference

As this is an international conference featuring speakers from around the world, the event will be held exclusively in English.

The opening session focuses on institutional guidelines and the role of national and international authorities in promoting coordinated road safety strategies, in line with global objectives and the activities of organizations such as PIARC and UNECE.
The first session addresses road safety as a central strategic theme for PIARC, exploring:

  • the main global challenges and future prospects in the field of road safety;
  • the contribution of resilient infrastructures, with particular attention to the characteristics of pavements;
  • the evolution of road safety in relation to connected and automated mobility;
  • the role of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS);
  • the social and economic impact of road accidents;
  • technological innovations applied to bridges, tunnels, and sustainable freight transport, including advanced structural monitoring and tunnel safety systems.

The second session is dedicated to technological innovations for saving lives, analyzing three key areas in an integrated manner:

  • Vehicle and driver, with a focus on advanced technologies (such as smart tires), risky behavior analysis, and new regulatory challenges related to autonomous driving;
  • Physical infrastructure, with insights into road safety devices, barriers, lighting, and design solutions aimed at reducing the severity of accidents;
  • Digital infrastructure, including smart road programs, structural monitoring, artificial intelligence for safety inspections, emergency management, and advanced pavement management systems.

The conclusions reaffirm the value of an integrated and multidisciplinary approach, in which technological innovation, institutional governance, scientific research, and public-private collaboration are key elements for continuously improving road safety levels and achieving the objectives of sustainability and protection of human life.
