IRF and WWF Formalise Partnership to Advance Sustainable Transport Infrastructure
Washington, D.C. | 14 January 2026 – The International Road Federation (IRF) and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing a framework for collaboration to promote more sustainable, resilient and environmentally responsible transport infrastructure worldwide.
The agreement reflects a shared commitment to accelerate the transformation towards inclusive, safe, green and efficient road systems for all under the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport. Read more about the voluntary commitment to support the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026–2035) by IRF, WWF and a global coalition of partners.
Under the MoU, IRF and WWF will collaborate on coordinated outreach efforts, knowledge sharing and thought leadership that will support policymakers, international organisations and transport practitioners. Areas of cooperation include the development and dissemination of best practices, case studies, analytical outputs and joint engagement at global dialogues.
“We are delighted to work with WWF to brings together complementary strengths from the road transport and conservation communities to help embed sustainability considerations more systematically into road infrastructure decision-making at all levels,” said Gonzalo Alcaraz, IRF Director General.
IRF mobilises its global membership and technical expertise from the road and transport community, while WWF contributes conservation-focused knowledge and technical support through its global network.
“The decisions we make about roads today will shape society, climate, and biodiversity for decades to come,” said Kate Newman, WWF’s Vice President, Sustainable Infrastructure and Public Sector Initiatives. “This collaboration with IRF allows us to advance new norms in the future of road development, where actions to restore and protect nature are integrated throughout the infrastructure life cycle so that both people and nature thrive. We look forward to leveraging our global expertise together to support a new era in sustainable transportation infrastructure.”
Through this partnership, IRF and WWF reaffirm their shared commitment to supporting countries and practitioners in translating global sustainability goals into practical action on the ground. The partnership will contribute to advancing real, measurable progress under the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport, ensuring that road networks better serve people, nature and long-term development objectives.
