IRF World Road Statistics: a unique opportunity to profile
Every year since 1964, the International Road Federation (Geneva) has been publishing the World Road Statistics (WRS), the most complete and authoritative source of data for the road sector. The WRS are produced by conducting an annual survey with primary data sources such as National Ministries, National Statistics Offices and Road & Transport Authorities.
The WRS 2020 will be released by early September 2020. This edition is a special one as it marks the launch of our new IRF Data Warehouse besides encompassing new and updated data for the years 2013-2018. Over 205 countries will be included with key data on topics such as Road Networks, Road Expenditures & Revenues, Road Traffic, Multimodal Traffic Comparisons, Road Accidents, Vehicles in Use, Vehicle Industry (Production, Imports, Exports and First Registration) and Energy Prices. Successful digital edition of Movin’On
Movin’On from Michelin achieved the goal of bringing together and on-line thousands of people to maintain the innovation momentum that the annual Summit creates, to reconnect with the year-round work on the future of mobility, and to honour the brightest talents via the Startup challenge.
Five of the many Movin’On Communities of Interest showcased their innovative work in the digital sessions that took place on 3 and 4 June. Over 1,700 mobility experts and enthusiasts observed some 100 high-level sustainable mobility stakeholders working together using the newly invented digital methodology.
But this is only the beginning... There are over 20 active Communities of Interest hard at work challenging the status quo and collectively working to discover actionable solutions for mobility that is cleaner, safer, more accessible and more efficient.
For its first digital edition, the 2020 Movin’On Startup Challenge went far beyond expectations. Employing the new digital platform, an unprecedented number of 3,500 participants was reached and recorded a total of 3,800 interactions with the Slido platform. That is what we call true engagement in the future of sustainable mobility.

BRITA appoints its Board & Technical Committees
The Belt and Road International Transport Alliance (BRITA) 2020 virtual board meeting was held on 9th June announcing the formal establishment of its Strategic Advisory Committee, Board of Directors, Technical Committees, and Secretariat. As Board member, IRF (Geneva) will be serving as Chair of the Sustainable Transport Committee and equally support the Secretariat and the Advisory Committee.
Mr. Mengyong WENG, president of the China Highway and Transportation Society (CHTS), was invited to serve as Chairman of BRITA Strategic Advisory Committee, Mr. Hailiang SONG, General Manager of China Communications Construction Group Co., Ltd. (CCCC), was nominated as Chairman of BRITA.
The meeting was chaired by Mr. Yun QIAO, deputy secretary general of CHTS. 50 representatives from more than 30 countries and regions including Russia, Greece, South Africa and Nepal, etc. participated in the meeting. Officials from the embassies and transportation departments of some countries in China and representatives of international organizations were invited to attend the meeting.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Wenjie LIU BRITA Executive Chairman and Secretary General said that since the outbreak of COVID-19 the transportation community in various countries have overcome many difficulties and worked tirelessly to play a key role in preventing the spread of the virus. BRITA members have all made hard efforts by helping each other in different ways. Despite the current challenges, BRITA's work is also actively advancing and the purpose of the meeting was to exchange experience, consolidate the cooperative partnership among BRITA members, promote exchanges and cooperation, and discuss how BRITA can facilitate the development of safe, sustainable and efficient transport networks in the current COVID19 scenario.
Ms. Nina GUAN Executive Secretary of BRITA gave an overview of BRITA past activities and plans for 2020-2021. BRITA has established three technical committees, signed strategic partnership agreements with board members, laying a solid foundation for the official establishment of BRITA. BRITA's work plan focuses on improving the organization structure, carrying out high-level seminars and joint research, developing talent training, especially youth training projects, and establishing BRITA awards and scholarships.
Ms. Susanna Zammataro, IRF Director General delivered a presentation to illustrate the key features of the position paper that IRF is currently finalising and that provides strategic recommendations for the road sector especially in the light of recovery post-Covid19. She suggested extending the same strategic framework and line of priorities to the Belt & Road and to work closely with BRITA members to outline concrete steps in the delivery of transport networks that are people-centred and sustainable.
New Webinar: Transportation Management Center Performance Dashboards
July 21, 2020 from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm EDT
The TMC PFS and FHWA jointly sponsored the development of the TMC Performance Dashboard technical report. This report highlights issues to consider and successful practices to support agencies planning, designing, developing, assessing, and using dashboards as they manage and explore opportunities to improve the performance of their TMCs. A webinar will be hosted on 21 July to present – in between others - how these dashboards can be used to assess and improve operations.
